Messier mandala WIP; craft studio visit

In my last post I mentioned a few things I’ve been working on that have been on the back burner for a very long time. One of these is a beaded mandala using Miyuki glass beads that I sourced in Japan last year.

When I have long stretches of good focus time, the mandala speeds along well. I’m not sure when I’ll be able to finish this little beauty, but I will chip away at it faithfully. Maybe by mid-April, I can share it with you.

Meanwhile, last Sunday I popped into my friend Elvie’s new downtown studio, and it’s adorable. Every corner has different craft inspiration, including some of her gorgeous hand-dyed yarns. Elvie is multi-talented; in addition to mastering knitting and crochet she’s an accomplished calligrapher, and has held workshops all over Korea. She goes by the moniker Eclecknitwitch on Instagram.

The studio is a long-time dream of Elvie’s, as a way to have a dedicated space outside of home for all her craft interests, as well as to open a welcoming space for like-minded folks. I’ve known Elvie for about ten years. We were trying to figure out exactly when we met. I think I first encountered this sweet lady at another creative hub and café, Buy the Book, that is sadly now closed. I immediately was drawn to her as a fellow creative and an all-around cool person.

At the studio, there were six of us doing our own crafty things, including beaded embroidery, diamond painting, amigurumi, and fancy coloring. I think we got much more chatting than crafting done, but that’s what makes these gatherings such fun. I love to see what other people are creating, and learn about some crafts that might be new me.

So glad you stopped by! See you again soon with more progress on some of my long-term back-burner projects 😀
