Nammeji Lake sculpture festival is back

The bright, temperate days of Korean Autumn are upon us, and I take every spare moment to be outside enjoying my favorite month of the year. This past weekend, we took a leisurely walk around Nammeji Lake, just west of campus, where the annual sculpture festival is in progress, through October 29.

I’m a huge fan of spotting public art, so this event is always a treat. The Gyeongsan Sculpture Association and the City of Gyeongsan organize the festival, and this year includes a few artist newcomers to the mix.

In the past, it was organized in December, but this year it’s in October, which makes much more sense, as a December walk around the lake is a bit too cold for my blood.

The theme is “Understanding and Evolution.” Some of the works that depict stylized human, humanoid, and anthropomorphic figures, definitely challenge both of those concepts.

Many types of materials are used in the works, including the familiar marble, stone, wood, and metal; a few figures make clever use of recycled materials, like one of my favorites – a giant golf-playing ant, rendered in old motorcycle parts. Check out my photos of sculptures from the 2020 and 2021 events, too.

If you come to the Gyeongsan area, Nammeji Lake is a walkable distance from Imdang subway station. There are a few places along the way to stop for a burger and a cold drink, or you can do as locals do, and bring your own lunch to eat lakeside.

I’m forever grateful that there are so many free diversions that inspire me and add to my quality of life here in this college town.
